Richard L. Makowiec, M.D. graduated from the University of Michigan in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology. Dr. Makowiec went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine in 1994. He completed a five-year residency in orthopaedic surgery at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in 1999. Dr. Makowiec completed a fellowship in hand, upper extremity, and microvascular surgery at the Indiana Hand Center in Indianapolis in 2000.
He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery with a Subspecialty Certificate in Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Makowiec is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Association for Hand Surgery.
Dr. Makowiec has special interest in elbow, wrist and hand arthroscopy, peripheral nerve injuries, sports injuries, and reconstructive surgery for upper extremity traumatic and arthritic conditions.
Prior to joining OAD Orthopaedics in March 2008, Dr. Makowiec served as an orthopaedic hand surgeon in the United States Navy and then as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. He maintains medical staff privileges at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.
