David Watt, M.D., Sports Medicine, Shoulder and Knee Specialist, traveled to Merida, Yucatan, Mexico with the Athletes in Action Sports Performance team to work with coaches, athletes and sports medicine physicians to enhance their understanding of sports medicine, training techniques, nutrition, hydration and performance. Dr. Watt’s orthopaedic sports medicine expertise complemented the other members’ areas of specialty - 2 athletic trainers and a former NFL player with a background in sports nutrition, strengthening and conditioning. The itinerary’s first two mornings were spent at the Instituto Tecnológico de Mérida, an engineering university, teaching coaches and athletes. During the afternoons, Dr. Watt evaluated orthopaedic sports injuries while the sports performance group worked with the athletes on fundamentals and training techniques.
Later in the week, the team visited the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán’s (UADY) medical school to teach and discuss sports medicine, nutrition/hydration and athletic training with UADY’s sports medicine residents and attending physicians in the sports medicine program. UADY has 1 of only 4 residency programs in sports medicine in all of Mexico. Sports medicine is a rather new subspecialty in Mexico but is a steadily growing discipline.
Dr. Watt is excited about the open dialogue and collaboration with the sports medicine physicians in Mexico. The Sports Performance team was invited to UADY’s first national sports medicine meeting next summer in Merida, and Dr. Watt looks forward to the possibility of participating in such a significant event!
